The Director of Digital Marketing is an integral partner developing, engaging, and monetizing direct/digital relationships with fans and growing our fan base. At the intersection of digital marketing, content, media, and commercial marketing, this role is a collaborative and flexible leader who will shape processes while leading and implementing integrated digital marketing campaigns. This role is both strategic and hands-on, equal parts creative and analytical, and an excellent communicator and storyteller with business partners. 

2023 marked the launch of MLS Season Pass as part of a 10-year partnership with Apple as the exclusive global streaming service of MLS. Fueling outstanding popularity in the League among both new and core fans. The Director of Marketing will help capitalize on this surge in demand and define how we reach and serve MLS fans through owned, partner, and paid digital channels.

Success requires a positive, adaptable, collaborative attitude that thrives in ambiguity and new ways of working. The Director of Digital Marketing leads without authority, project manage deliverables and timelines, and influence across organizational silos independent of control or ownership of specific marketing channels or teams.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead digital marketing strategies and launch plans for key marketing moments and events across email, app, push, website and partner inventory through actionable, multi-channel journeys
  • Develop strategy and digital marketing plans for League-wide marketing and business priorities beyond match-driven moments including digital engagement opportunities, consumer products and commercially focused initiatives
  • Support in establishing the role of MLS owned and operated digital platforms when moving fans through points of initial acquisition, engagement and conversion, with focus on activation
  • Create efficient processes to drive digital marketing, developing replicable frameworks for campaign creation and execution, to also be able to repurpose for and share out with Clubs
  • Lead go-to-market planning and ongoing optimization efforts for digital-first fan engagement opportunities including Free-to-Play games, NFTs and similar digital product offerings
  • Lend hands-on support with tactical marketing, including email production, project management, copy writing, push notifications, etc.
  • Outline processes for efficient review and approval of marketing plan parameters, creative, and copy across channels
  • Partner with creative to optimize campaign performance based on consumer insights and data
  • Lead integrated, cross-functional digital marketing meetings


Required Skills

  • 8+ years of experience in integrated or brand and digital marketing
  • At least 3+ years of experience translating brand strategy into insight-led, data driven, integrated marketing plans
  • Consumer marketing experience required. Subscription, media, or sports experience preferred
  • Leads by doing, thinking leading, and influencing
  • Strong and demonstrated analytical skills
  • A self-starter who can thrive in ambiguity and navigate multiple tasks in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent presenter and storyteller
  • Exceptional cross-departmental operator
  • Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills with imperfect data
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook required. Confluence, Figma, and Asana preferred.

Total Rewards

Starting Base Salary: $115,000 – $150,000. MLS/SUM base salaries are contingent upon several factors including individual qualifications, market financials, and operational business needs.
