Title: Digital Marketing Associate

Division: Marketing & Communications

Reports to: Director of Marketing Content Strategy

Position Status: Part-time; Non-Exempt

Starting pay rate: $16.00/hour

Position summary:

The Digital Marketing Associate's primary responsibility is managing the VirginiaHistory.org website and email communications. For the website, this entails regular site audits to continually improve user experience, provide edits and site updates as needed, develop and distribute new articles and multimedia content, and optimize SEO and site traffic. For email communications, this includes template design, segmentation management, editorial calendar development, and analytics reporting. This role collaborates as part of the Marketing team with the Collections, Guest Engagement, and Exhibitions & Publications divisions to ensure that events, exhibitions, and collections are effectively promoted.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Email Responsibilities:

  • Makes recommendations for editorial calendar and develops email communications to museum's subscriber lists, defining user types and creating components/templates by audience (members, nonmembers, new subscribers, families, etc.)
  • Manages email database including segmentation and list builds for targeted audiences through museum's CRM system
  • Designs and executes new subscriber journey and reengagement strategies
  • Conducts regular communications audit of email volume by user and makes recommendations to enhance engagement and visitation to VMHC properties
  • Proactively engages with Wordfly's developing features and workflow capabilities and makes recommendations to enhance product use and user experience
  • Updates source codes and tracking measures in Tessitura, analyzes results, and delivers regular reporting for full audience and targeted segments
  • Develops, implements and evaluates results of A/B tests
  • Manages and maintains surveys including creation, delivery, and reporting

Website Responsibilities:

  • Manages website including regular content audit and optimization, as well as periodic redesigns, focused on improving usability and visual appeal to increase conversion
  • Makes edits both proactively as needed and upon departmental request
  • Regularly updates multimedia listings on website media pages, YouTube, and SoundCloud
  • Enhances and expands upon existing website articles, makes recommendations for writers of new topics, provides editorial review, uploads new articles, and cross-lists related content on VirginiaHistory.org
  • Increases site traffic using a variety of tools including Google Adwords/ SEM and SEO optimization

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:

  • Experience with online email platforms (ex. MailChimp, Constant Contact, WordFly)
  • Experience with website editing and publishing (ex. WordPress, Drupal)
  • Experience with CRM databases
  • Familiarity with HTML5 and CSS
  • Experience with digital analytics (including Google Analytics)
  • Knowledge of current trends in accessibility, SEO, and CX standards
  • Ability to plan and execute compelling audio/visual and written content that drives website traffic
  • Ability to create or edit graphics for digital media in Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong understanding of online marketing concepts and best practices
  • Ability to establish clear goals and enthusiastic desire to meet them
  • Excellent communication skills and willingness to collaborate with team members
  • Ability to prioritize and thoughtfully plan work activities combined with a willingness to adapt and flex to changing needs

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, website management, email communications, digital media, or a related field or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience in email marketing, including targeting and segmentation

Note & Special Requirements:

  • Interest in history and/or knowledge of Virginia history & culture preferred
